A soldier born in the early 17th century, Charles de Batz de Castelmore dArtagnan served as the inspiration for the hero of the "Three Musketeers" by Alexandre Dumas. A young cadet from Gascony, dArtagnan dreams of becoming one of the king's musketeers, which he succeeds in doing at the end of the novel after many adventures (including the case of the Queens jewels, and the siege of La Rochelle).
